- Process Details
Music is a driving inspiration for my work. The cultural movements in design, fashion, photography, and human expression that are attached to great records and moments have led me to a wealth of new ideas and knowledge.
I’m an artist at heart and my studio allows me to apply these sensibilities to practical design projects, but album artwork provides the opportunity to lean further on intuition.
My approach is to internalize the thesis of the music and reflect it back through imagery, while also developing additional layers of context. I believe great album artwork engages with the audience in a conversational way, providing opportunity for further understanding of the music itself.
My process involves listening and compiling my first thoughts on tone, mood, message, and sonic reference points. I also speak with the artist and make sure that I understand the intention of the work, taking into account any visual references they have in mind.
Note taking graduates to mood boarding and sketching, presenting ideas to the artist, and eventually execution of an agreed upon concept. When designing album artwork, I often utilize photography (film and digital), fine art processes like painting and inking, and I bring it all together with scanning and digital design techniques.
Many of these projects required calling on my network of friends and collaborators for additional help with wardrobe, styling, and/or photography, but each was my creative direction.
